What is an automatic?

An automatic, also known as an automatic transmission, is a type of transmission that uses a fluid coupling system to automatically change gears without the need for a clutch pedal or manual shifting. This type of transmission is commonly found in automobiles and allows for a more comfortable and convenient driving experience.

Automatic transmissions typically use planetary gearsets to achieve different gear ratios, which are controlled by a hydraulic system that engages and disengages various clutch packs. The driver selects the desired mode (e.g. drive, reverse, park) using a shifter or buttons, and the transmission takes care of the rest.

Benefits of automatic transmissions include easier driving in traffic or on hilly terrain, smoother shifting, and improved fuel efficiency compared to manual transmissions. However, they can be less engaging for drivers who prefer more control over their gears and can be more expensive to repair or maintain.
